Friday Harbor Maritime Center

Friday Harbor, Washington

EHDD, teamed with Reid Middleton, Leon Environmental, Cross, Rainbow and Cumming, is designing a new Marine Technical Center on the shoreline of Jensen Marina just west of Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, Washington. The two-story waterfront building houses a mix of light industrial and office spaces in support of Port tenants and future development. IOSA (Island Oil Spill Association) is the tenant of the western building on the upper level. The majority of the building will be wood-framed, with full-story retaining walls addressing a significant grade change across the width of the building. Structural Insulated Panels (SIPS) form the exterior enclosure. The building is clad with cedar siding and metal roofing to provide a low maintenance facility. Solar panels will reduce the energy use of the building. The asymmetrical roof lines reflect the historic waterfront buildings on San Juan Island. As part of the project, new parking, a water-front trail/boardwalk and new public stairway that accesses the shoreline will be provided. Recognizing a unique opportunity for the Friday Harbor community, our team established an innovative redevelopment strategy to satisfy MTCA cleanup requirements, while enabling the Port to maximize the remaining life cycle of existing infrastructure, planning for concurrent long-term redevel-opment and site cleanup, and maximizing Port eligibility for grant reimbursement. The remedial action grant application package was among the highest-ranked projects in Washington.
