Crystal Springs

Hillsborough, CA

The historic Crocker mansion has seen little modification since it’s completion in 1917, and features particularly ornate plaster, wood, and fine stone interior detailing. These historic details are beautiful and worthy of preservation, but can be challenging for educational day-to-day use and construction restoration. It has been EHDD’s charge and joy to meticulously coordinate the new building systems and selective renovations in harmony with the existing historic fabric and the needs of a vibrant independent school.

The project begins with an extensive seismic upgrade consisting of new foundations, strategically-placed concrete shear walls, and additional steel members to strengthen capacity and reinforce connections. Mansion access and inclusivity will be enhanced with an elevator, accessible entrance ramp, and fully accessible restrooms and program spaces. An entirely new, all-electric VRF HVAC system will vastly improve thermal comfort, while boosting resilience for extreme heat and smoke days.  In addition to the major building system upgrades, the project features thoughtful reconfigurations of the existing floor plans to provide learning spaces of adequate size and shape, outfitted with 21st-century technology and acoustical treatments.

The Mansion renovation construction begins Summer 2025.
