University of Washington Chemical Sciences Building (CSB)

The University of Washington is replacing the Chemistry Library with a new Chemical Sciences Building (CSB) that will transform research and education for the Department of Chemistry.

Building Vision
The CSB is a lab-focused facility designed to enable a new mode of science where fundamental chemical research transforms into real-world applications in real-time. The building will co-locate faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students—currently housed in Bagley Hall and Chemistry Library—to maximize collaboration and interdisciplinary discovery.

Program
The CSB will include wet labs, high-performing research labs, research offices, collaboration spaces, general assignment classrooms, and support facilities. Flexible research spaces are designed for synergy across disciplines.

Impact
This first phase of a multi-phase project will enhance the Department’s ability to recruit and retain top talent, grow its research portfolio, and secure increased grant funding. The CSB will strengthen industry partnerships, foster public/private collaborations, and create a pipeline of chemistry graduates to meet evolving workforce needs.
