Alta Wyoming Residence

Alta, Wyoming

Located at the base of Grand Targhee Ski Resort just off Ski Hill Road, this 4,000-square-foot home serves as both ski retreat and full-time residence for an active family.

The house is organized as a linear form connected to a freestanding garage by a glass walkway. Both entries lead into the main social hub—a soaring volume containing kitchen, living room, dining room, and a TV room tucked behind the fireplace. The master suite anchors the north end, while two children’s bedrooms and a large bunk room for ski guests occupy the south end.

The site’s most striking feature—views of the Grand Tetons—inspired the home’s most distinctive architectural element: large sawtooth dormers that echo the distant mountain peaks and capture abundant daylight that shifts with the valley’s dynamic skies. On the Teton-facing side, three dormers extend in a 20-foot cantilever to shelter the outdoor deck, hot tub, and barbecue area.

Charred wood siding and a steep-slope metal roof are designed for heavy snowfall, while super-insulated walls over a foot thick provide thermal comfort in this extreme mountain environment. The undulating wood ceiling connects the sawtooth dormers across both facades.
