California Science Center Ecosystems Wing

At the new Ecosystems Wing at the California Science Center, visitors experience first-hand the interconnectedness of the natural world, through the integration of live animals, hands-on exhibits and media. The 140,000 sf addition to the existing museum contains exhibit spaces organized as a series of complex ecological environments—including a 2,500 sf desert zone and a 188,000 gallon kelp forest with a planned 20,000 sf rainforest—that each teach a different ecological principle. To support a diverse collection of mammals, fish, birds and reptiles, the Center includes a 1,300 sf veterinary facility, along with various holding facilities specific to each group. The addition also includes two floors of administrative offices and upgraded infrastructure for the entire museum complex. The Center embodies an ecological approach to architecture as well; a green building that uses sustainable materials, natural systems and advanced technologies to conserve natural resources and energy.
